[Interview] WiSTONE Entertainment – Dawn of Survivors

Earlier this year a new survival horror game hit the market, and immediately everybody on Twitter was talking about it. Dawn of Survivors offers an immersive player experience with online capabilities that allows people to try to survive on their own, team up with other survivors, because together we are stronger, or show their dominance and try to rule with a ruthless fist.

Boasting a large world, endless crafting opportunities, countless environments, zombies, weapons, missions and more, it quickly became a go-to game for many.

I was lucky enough to get the chance to sit down with the development team at WiSTONE Entertainment to chat about the game and what went into making it.

What was the game that made you want to be a developer?

Ever since my brother showed me Wolfenstein 3D and told me I could make a game like that if I learned to code, I decided to be a developer.

Do you have a favourite system either past or present?

Playstation 2.  It was the first console I purchased with my own money.

How long did Dawn of Survivors take you to make?

1 year and 10 months; new content on its way!

How many people worked on the project?

About 12, including programmers, designers, and artists.  Music, Sound Effects, and some art were outsourced.

Could you give us some insight into the process you go through when making a game?

We developed our first playable demo in 3 months.  Our team put it through the QA grind for a solid week, then relayed our feedback to the development team.  For the next several months, we repeated the steps: develop, QA, update, etc. We had constant discussions and development meetings on what to change or add.  Our focus was on making an intense yet fun game that challenged and rewarded players for surviving the apocalypse. Eventually, we added a pet and online mode so that players would have companions on their journeys or face other players who are also surviving the apocalypse.  The choice to fight or be peaceful is theirs!

The price for the game is very low, especially for the quality and content. What made you go for such a low price point?

Our focus was on reaching a large community and getting as much feedback as possible.  This is our first game on Nintendo Switch, so we wanted to make a massive impression by reaching as many as possible.

Survival horror is a popular genre, what do you think makes it such a fascinating subject matter?

Players like to prove their self-sufficiency in a chaotic world.  They want their mental and physical abilities and will to survive, to be challenged.

What do you find to be the core components of survival horror games?

A variety of horrific monsters and constant danger that require the player to use their abilities to the fullest.

What is your favorite type of Zombie in the game?

The zombie girl.  She’s a tribute to the character in The Walking Dead TV show.

Do you have any tips for people just starting out the game? How would you go about playing it?

Gather as many resources as possible before you try to take on the hordes of zombies.  If you have to find more resources, kill a few easier zombies and search them. Then stay safe in your shelter.

How long do you think you would survive post-apocalypse? Be honest now ☺

A few days, at most.  Can’t live without In N Out Burger =P

If you could create an instalment for any game series what would it be and why?

A VR version of the cyberpunk world in Blade Runner.

What are you currently working on, or do you have a new project in mind now that Dawn of survivors is out for sale?

There are no current plans for a new project.  Our primary focus is on making Dawn of Survivors even better.

What do you think makes a game remarkable and resonate with a modern audience?

A great story, a detailed world, and a strong community to play with.  An open world of freedom with no limit to how players use their creativity.

What made you choose the Nintendo Switch as your publishing platform?

It’s the fastest growing platform and it empowers players wherever they are.  They can take the game with them everywhere.

Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it.

If you haven’t had the chance to check out Dawn of Survivors yet on the Nintendo Switch I would recommend giving it a try today. It’s a great game that has all of the elements needed in a survival horror game, and the guys that made it are a pretty cool bunch. Why not check out there website or Twitter, linked below.
