Xbox / Bethesda Showcase | E3 2021

I do not own an Xbox, nor am I on GamePass. Obviously, I am the perfect person to cover this! Let’s see if Microsoft can show anything that will convert me to their way of doing things.

They didn’t show much for Starfield, just a cinematic teaser, but did they have to show much? People have been salivating for this one long enough that I think seeing anything will have them excited.

Coming November 2022

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl

This one is going to be only on the new generation, so the future is here. Looks to be a lot of shooting and exploring with some mutant creatures. One of the guys around the campfire in the trailer had a lot of personality, which is always great to see in these more dower games. However, I do take issue with using a disaster like Chernobyl as the backdrop for your game about mutants. It just comes off as really tasteless.

Set for April

A spiritual follow up to Left4Dead by some of the folks who made Left4Dead! Looks interesting enough and there is some color to it that I really liked instead of it being another grey and brown zombie situation. The zombies also look like they’re mutated in some sort of a way and that could lead to some really interesting character design.

Set for October

Contraband is a co-op open world game. That’s about all we know besides what we can guess at from the title. This slow motion cinematic trailer didn’t have anything about gameplay to be found so we’re going to have to wait for it.

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life

First thing I thought was that that lady seemed a lot like Calypso from The Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Lo and behold, it was her! There’s a Pirates of the Caribbean expansion coming to Sea of Thieves via a collaboration with Disney. Looks like it’s a big deal too, not just slapping Captain Jack in there but a lot of areas as well as Davy Jones coming up from the deep. A nice fleshed out expansion is always a good thing to see.

They’re very happy to have Yakuza on Game Pass and to show that off, it looks like Like A Dragon is coming to Game Pass as well. Perfect chance for those who were unsure of it before to check it out.

Battlefield 2042

This was the point in the presentation that I began to grow tired of being shown a lot of shooting games back to back. It looks like there’s going to be big explosions with some tanks and all those things that you look for in these warfare type games. Keep in mind that there was a lot of cinematic elements to this trailer though.

Coming in October

12 Minutes

For a change of pace we got to see Twelve Minutes again. This Annapurna title keeps getting trotted and and it’s good to see that we’re getting it in just a few months since it’s slated for mid-August. I’m watching this one with interest.

Psychonauts 2

Perhaps the most fun art style that we got to see for the presentation was the wildly colorful and wacky Psychonauts 2. This one has been a long time in the making and I’m sure that the fact that we’ll be seeing it in August will have those who have been waiting so long wildly excited.

Bethesda Time

Switching gears to Bethesda, it turns out that ten more of their games are going to be popping onto Game Pass soon, so all you Bethesda fans can look forward to that. What caught my attention more was that Doom Eternal is getting an update for the next gen consoles, but when they mentioned the big upgrades the language was very Xbox specific, so I’m curious if Xbox is only getting the bells and whistles.

Fallout 76

Fallout 76 may have just removed their battle Royale functionality, but they’ve got two expansions/additions coming down the line that they were happy to show off. They had more for Steel Reign than they did for The Pitt, but given that one is coming sooner, that’s to be expected. It’s mentioned to all be free to Fallout 76 players, so it seems to be multiplatform.

Steel Reign is coming in July

The Pitt is set for 2022

Elder Scrolls Online

Elder Scrolls online is coming to the Xbox consoles so for those of you who are interested but didn’t have a powerful enough PC, here’s your chance. They also teased some of the new content that they have coming for the game this fall.

Party Animals

This one looks really cute. I can get behind just watching a bunch of stuffed animals smack the stuffing out of each other. It’s unclear exactly what’s going on besides all these cute critters smacking each other around, but the game isn’t coming until 2022 so they have plenty of time to let us know more before release.

Hades is coming to Game Pass everybody! Get Hype! Well, beyond that, it’s also getting a physical edition so we can all dive down into the depths of the underworld together.

Coming August

I’m not sure what’s going on exactly here, but this end of the world story sure looks pretty. I’m willing to bet there’s a lot about protecting what matters most to you when everything is falling apart around you. I guess I’ll be waiting until 2022 to find out.

Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is going to be free to play, which is good for all of you who want more multiplayer goodness but weren’t completely sold on the main game itself. You can pick and choose just what parts you want. They showed off the multiplayer and while I don’t know a ton about Halo, it does look like what I would expect Halo multiplayer to look like.

They chose to go with a cinematic trailer for the campaign info so it does look a little big better, however I found that the AI lady’s expressions were a little overdone which just made her look kind of funny.

Both are set to come out this Holiday season

Diablo 2 Resurrection

Blizzard is giving Diablo 2 a whole new look that’s pretty impressive. It’s also coming soon with being slated to be out in September.

Plague Tale Requiem

All I know is that Plague Tale Requiem has a tidal wave of rats coming down a street and honestly, I think that’s all I need to know right now. It was certainly attention grabbing and those who liked the first one will likely be excited to see this. No gameplay, but it’s not out until 2022 so there’s time for that.

Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 is popping up everywhere in a really aggressive marketing strategy. However, we’re seeing something different from the Ubisoft presentation. While Ubisoft’s showing was more focused on villain and story, this trailer was all about gameplay and weapon variety, making it slot in effortlessly with the other shooting action that we were seeing in this presentation. Also, there’s an attack rooster so what more do you need to know?

We’ll be seeing this one in October.

Slime Rancher 2

Slime Rancher 2 looks like it’s more slime rancher and while I haven’t played it, I know that’s going to be enough for a lot of people to jump right into this one. However, they’ll be waiting until 2022.

Behold! A snowboarding game! These are a bit of a rarer breed, so it’s good to see someone keeping them alive. I personally was quite happy to see how powdery fresh all the snow looked. It looks beautiful and is arriving at just the right time this December.

Atomic Heart

Atomic Heart has my curiosity for sure. Some kind of robot apocalypse but also there are wires coming out of people and there’s some kind of telekinesis going on because of that. It has my interest enough that I’ll be keeping an eye on this one.

Replaced was the first time that we saw some pixel art in the presentation and it looked absolutely gorgeous. The movement was fluid and the combat looked even better. Very visually distinct, which helped it to stand out in the middle of the presentation. Looking forward to hearing more before it comes out in 2022.

Grounded makes me think of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids vibes and I really love that. How did this one pass me by? Well, it’s getting an update that’s adding things like crazy mushrooms as well as sitting and pets, which were evidently really requested by the playerbase. It seems just delightful so good for them!

That update is coming at the end of June

Among Us

Among us is coming to Xbox soon and not only that, it will have all the updates that are coming along with the continued development of the game. That includes 15 player lobbies to just increase the suspicion and chaos.

Eiyuden Chronicle

You might remember Eiyuden Chonicle as that kickstarter-ed game not that long ago. Well it looks like things are going well and it looks completely gorgeous. The big Hundred Heroes game is slated to come to Xbox in 2023, which is a ways off, but before that they have Rising coming in 2022 in order to tide people over for the wait.

The Ascent

The Ascent is an isometric game that’s coming to Game Pass in July. It’s not my kind of thing, but if the trailer intrigues you, I’m sure that it will be worth checking out.

Age of Empires 4

Age of Empires 4 is also coming to Xbox, bringing all that historical battle goodness to the console. Those who are excited don’t have much longer to wait as the end of October is not that long away. Is this how you’re going to spend your Halloween?

The Outer Worlds 2

If you haven’t watched this trailer, that’s something you should do right now. It is my favorite trailer of E3 so far, making fun of the formula of cinematic trailers that really don’t have anything at all to show off. However, I feel the need to point out that joking about not having anything to show does not make it better that you’re announcing a game without having anything to show.

Microsoft Flight Simulator

This is not what the internet led me to believe Microsoft Flight Simulator was all about. My understanding was that it was all about finding your own house and then crashing into it. That being said, it’s good to see that it’s going to be more available as it comes to consoles in late July and that there’s going to be a crossover expansion with Top Gun later this fall.

Forza Horizons 5

Forza Horizon 5 is getting a battle royale mode because everything these days has to have a battle royale mode. However, they are actually showing gameplay because this one is set to be out in November. It certainly looks shiny and they are taking advantage of all that power that they have behind it now. It might not be for me, but they didn’t try to sell me a car along with the game for once. Good for everyone looking forward to this.

This was their big ender and I think it was a good choice. Everyone’s been curious what buying Bethesda might produce and one of those things is that Arkane will be bringing us Redfall. It’s still a ways off since it won’t be here until Summer 2022, but I am curious. We’ve got a zombie sort of thing but it’s vampires instead which means guns that shoot sunlight and crossbows with wooden stakes. There also looks to be a magic system in this world. We’ll get to see how this studio builds an open world shooter as well.
